The timeline and location of the research paper focuses on the second half of the 19th century. So roughly 1850’s to 1899 in California. The paragraph below is basically what the paper is going to be about with my thesis statement at the end. It should also be copy-pasted and put at the beginning of the paper as an opening paragraph. But a more thorough break down of the issues and points the research paper should look into and talk about is this rhetoric about sexual deviancy, the impropriety of gender relations among Chinese, the unmanliness or sexual deviancy of Chinese men, the kind of heathenism and moodness of Chinese women, and the ways in which that kind of sexual stereotyping is deployed in the Californian newspaper accounts about the Chinese. And then how it is used in political efforts to exclude, expel the Chinese or to discriminate against the Chinese in various legislative ways and legal ways.
Then to connect the two pieces together that you have. On one hand, here are the reports about practices of the Chinese, and particularly their sexual deviancies, and especially, then, their treatment of women, and the prostitution of women, and so forth. And then later, connect it to the political arguments that are made in the 1870s about exclusion. And by the Working Man’s Party, by Dennis Carney, in particular through his speech. Please show how the rhetoric of the Working Men’s Party, and people like Carney, draw really directly and specifically on those reports of, and language about, Chinese sexual deviancy, women being held in prostitution, etc. Do they draw specifically on this aspect of Chinese behavior to justify their weak rationale for why Chinese need to be expelled, excluded, prevented for further immigration, etc.
