You are a campaign manager for one of two presidential candidates. You are to design a mathematical strategy and procedure for your candidate to get a majority or greater of the electoral votes. For this project we are assuming that all states give all electoral votes from their state to the majority winner. These are the conditions of the campaign:
Define every state and their political affiliation into three categories: Democratic states
Republican states
Swing states
You will have to do your own research, because there is a right answer to all these categories based on history.
Define the total number of electoral votes.
What are most electoral votes needed to win?
Define the exact number of electoral votes in each state.
If you choose to be the democratic campaign manager, then you must base your strategy on prior knowledge that you will lose New York to the Republicans.
If you choose to be the republic campaign manager, then you must base your strategy on prior knowledge that you will lose Florida to the democrats.
Some things to think about:
Based on the mathematics what states will be extremely important for your candidate to win?
What cities and states will you visit the last 4 weeks of the election and why?
What is your mathematical strategy to limit the number of miles traveled by your candidate, but still cover the cities and states you need to win the majority?
