Reading:Karen Ho, “Biographies of Hegemony”Azar Nafisi, “Selections from Reading Lolita in Tehran”
While crafting your response, you might consider some of the following questions. (These are meant to help you brainstorm. Your paper does NOT have to answer all of them. Instead, make sure the paper argues for a clear central claim.)
What kinds of details do both authors notice and record about their subjects’ lives?
Do they make similar types of observations?
How do the details they record differ from each other?
What does this tell us about the authors’ interests, priorities, or values?
How would you characterize the oppressive systems described in both readings?
Who’s in charge?
Who benefits? Who is harmed?
What types of control do these systems exert on people’s actions?
What ways, if any, do we see people resisting oppressive systems in these readings?
How would Nafisi interpret Ho’s evidence, and vice versa?
Can you take a concept found in one reading and apply it to another?
What can we learn from reading these texts together that we couldn’t learn from reading them separately?
Your paper should make an independent claim rather than merely summarizing the texts. It should also support this claim by close reading passages from the texts. Rough draft must be a minimum of 1300 words (about four full pages). I will be commenting on these drafts; expect to receive your comments on Friday or thereabouts.Final draft must be a minimum of 1700 words (about five full pages). In order to receive credit, you must make significant revisions from your first draft.Late work may result in a lowered final grade. In Reading Lolita in Tehran, Nafisi describes Iran as “a country where all gestures, even the most private, were interpreted in political terms” (Nafisi 292). In this paper, I’d like you to put this idea in conversation with Ho’s claim that the “small” and “everyday” actions of her subjects provide the key to understanding the system of domination created by Wall Street (Ho 163). Drawing on evidence from both authors, answer the following question: what is the relationship between private or everyday life and politics? In what ways do people’s daily choices help to maintain oppressive systems, or to resist them?
