Please watch at least approximately 60 minutes of the video. You do not have to start at the beginning, and you can jump around.

How do you introduce the topic of cultural diversity to children, when so often it is the “elephant in the room”? What is age-appropriate ways to talk about such complex concepts as discrimination and culture? Watch as group counseling experts, Drs. Sheri Bauman and Sam Steen, demonstrate the answers to these and other thought-provoking questions in this complete recording of six live, unscripted counseling sessions with a group of fifth graders.

Chock-full of tips on everything from participant screening to self-disclosure to termination, this uncut video is an exceptionally valuable learning tool for professionals who want to improve their group facilitation skills, no matter the topic or population.

After reviewing the video, please write a 1/2 – 1page reflection paper discussing your thoughts in relation to the material in the videos. Some questions to get you thinking (you do not have to answer every one of these prompts– and if you have something to say about the video that is unrelated to the prompts, I am open to that as well– just show me that you are thinking about how you will apply these things in your future groups):

  1. Was this video useful in preparing me to run my own group? Why or why not?
  2. What are some of the things I noticed and felt were important (if anything) in the videos?
  3. Can I see myself doing any of the things that were modeled/mentioned in the videos? Why or why not?
  4. What are some of the functional roles (see your readings for this unit) that I saw members take on in the group?
  5. What did the leaders do to make the group “work”? Were there things that the leaders could have done differently to achieve a different effect? Explain.
