To complete this assignment, read Turner’s essay (print pages 24 through 40) and two
responses (print pages 41 through 57) below—note that the second part did not feature
on Perusall. Drawing on the background knowledge that you gained from textbook study
and collaborative annotation, write an argument-driven and evidence-based essay that:
– succinctly summarizes the essence of Turner’s commentary / his main argument,
– identifies and explains strengths and weaknesses in the commentator’s perspective,
– assesses the historical validity of this perspective for different groups of people in the
United States
Your essay needs to be 500 to 700 words in length. Make sure your paper begins with an
introduction, continues with concise and thematic body paragraphs, and ends with a
brief conclusion. Your introduction must feature a straightforward thesis statement that
identifies your argument and maps out your response.
Analyze the primary sources below in meaningful ways and refrain from merely
summarizing their content. Use information from the respective sections of the textbook
for contextualization purposes. Do not use external sources. Cite all your sources and
format your paper in accordance with the standards of the Chicago Manual of Style.
Identify all cited content with the aid of proper footnotes. Include a full list of works
cited (bibliography, not part of the word count) at the end of your paper.
Put all text in Arial 12pt font (and put all footnote text in Arial 10pt). Double-space all
text (except for footnotes and bibliography). Use margins of one inch on each side of
each page. Indent the first line of each paragraph
