Essay on What you Learned in the Course

You will write a polished, 1200 word (minimum) essay. The essay will contain a summary of the main themes of the course and a reflection on what you learned in the course. Consult the Resources link in preparing your essay

The summary should comprise the first (roughly) 900 words and respond to the following questions:

1) What were the main themes in the course? (hint: consult the syllabus) Provide concrete examples song, artists, events, and/or articles that we read that demonstrated those themes.
2) Choose one of the genres that we explored in the course and summarize the history and issues surrounding it, according to the materials provided on that genre (lecture video, readings, and in class lectures).

3) Describe the role that technology has played in the changes in how people listen to and create music, including how technology has contributed to the development of the major genres of today.

The reflection should comprise the remaining (roughly) 300 words and respond to the following questions:

1) How has the information that you learned in this course impacted your music listening practices and thinking about popular music?
2) How has the information that you learned in this course impacted your life more generally?

Evaluation

Your essay will be evaluated based on content and form. For content, your essay will be evaluated based on the quality of your responses to the summary and reflection questions above For form, your essay will be evaluated along the following criteria:

1. Does the essay meet the word limit requirement?
2. Do the ideas presented in each sentence flow easily from the previous sentences?
3. Is the esay divided into paragraphs in a logical fashion (introduction/body/conclusion)?
4. Does the essay have grammatical or spelling errors?
