PART 2- Reflective Essay (1500 words +/- 10%). Please answer either A or B but not both questions.
Liz is a 36-year old woman subject to a Community Order of 12 months for an offence of Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm. The offence was a ‘road rage’ incident, which occurred when another driver beeped her horn at Liz as she was parked in the middle of the road while waiting to pick up a friend. Liz jumped out of her car screaming abuse and punched the other driver several times in the face. Her attitude towards the offence appears to fluctuate between expressing remorse, blaming the other woman for being ‘rude and impatient’ and denying responsibility because of her mental illness.Liz has been diagnosed with anxiety and a borderline anti-social personality disorder. She is prescribed medication, which she generally complies with although she admits to often drinking heavily on top of this. She is in a relationship with a man who is well known to Probation as he has a record of serious Domestic Violence. Liz has disclosed that he has been violent to her in the past and there are also suspicions that he controls her use of medication but she insists they are ‘generally happy’ and she does not want to leave him. She is not in contact with any other family members and appears to have few friends. She is signed off from work on health grounds and in receipt of benefits. She and her partner live in a council owned property although the tenancy is specifically in her name.
A good essay will discuss:
How you would set about assessing Liz’s criminogenic needs.
What gaps there are in your knowledge, which would need to be filled in order to work with Liz constructively and where you would look to fill them
Liz’s diversity issues i.e. her background and current living situation and in what ways she is similar or different to you.
Which rehabilitative techniques you might use to work with her?
What personal (this might link to diversity issues) and organisational barriers there might be when working with Liz?
N.B. A very topical theme in relation to possibly consider in relation to rehabilitative practice is the impact of Covid-19 on ‘typical’ experiences of supervision for both staff and Service Users. A useful source to reference here is a report by the ‘Making Every Adult Matter’ (MEAM) coalition, which identified both positive and negative possible aspects. You may wish to consider this in terms of potential issues for Liz and how they relate to those highlighted in the report.
Additional guidance:
Demonstrate that you have read and used relevant parts of the online module and other relevant theoretical literature and research.
Essays should be referenced using the APA referencing system
Full sentences should be used in the essay.
However, when you are explaining theory which supports your interventions or setting out your introduction please use the third person passive. E.g. “When talking to Liz I [i.e. first person] would consider how I could be gender sensitive, because it has been highlighted [i.e. 3rd person passive] that women have been different criminogenic needs to men (Shaw and Hannah-Moffat, 2004; Brown and Blanchette, 2006; Corston, 2007; Caulfield, 2010)”.
Please proofread your essay carefully (or ask a friend or colleague to do so) looking for spelling, grammatical and sentence structure errors.
