Purpose
This essay will ask you to explore the question of whether or not the South needed to secede. You will have the opportunity to read some documents that express the reasons for the South seceding, as well as documents that may indicate that secession was not necessary.

In your essay, you need to write at least one and one-half pages supporting the idea that secession could have been avoided and/or was not necessary. You will then need to write at least one and one-half pages supporting the idea that secession was necessary and was unavoidable in the minds of some Southerners. You will also need to look through your textbook and include at least two historical events that support each point of view.
