Research the life and artistic expression of an artist that you choose, and evaluate 2 – 3 key artworks by the artist. In order to be suitable for this assignment, the artist must be a noteworthy artist who has made significant contributions to art history. (Note: Vincent van Gogh is not eligible for this assignment because he was the subject of the first paper.) It could be a painter, a sculptor, an architect, a photographer, or mixed-media artist, etc.
Your choice will be discussed with the instructor. Topics should be emailed to the instructor for approval no later than December 7th. No paper will be accepted unless the topic is approved in advance. If you need assistance in finding a suitable subject, contact the instructor.
Your paper should briefly review the life and art of the particular artist and briefly discuss the contributions of the artist to art history. What are the key themes and characteristics in the artist’s work? Choose at least two or three artworks by the artist to focus on and evaluate. Compare and contrast these works and explain why they appeal to you and how the works convey the artist’s style. How did the artist contribute to a particular movement? How did the artist influence other artists? Your focus here should be on your own personal evaluation of the artworks and an assessment of the historical issues and historical context.
