-Once you’ve uncovered what scholars and others have said about your topic, the next step is to analyze your topic and provide your original insights into the topic/problem.

-For this assignment, students will complete a 6-8 page essay that states a position relative to the topic/problem identified and discusses the objections, assumptions, and implications of this position. Students also examine whether the proposed solution is feasible and under what circumstances their proposed approach would work. This assignment allows students to bring in their own experience (and internship experience), alongside the scholarly sources, to better understand and articulate how we, as a society, might respond to the topic or problem identified at the outset of the course.

-Grading criteria: Students can state a position or solution and the objections, assumptions, and implications of this position or solution. Student examines feasibility of solution/perspective. Limits of position are acknowledged, other points of view are synthesized within thesis, and own and other’s assumptions are analyzed systematically and methodically. Can reasonably defend against these objections. Viewpoints of experts are questioned thoroughly and competently. Conclusions and analysis are logical and reflect students’ informed evaluation of evidence. Conclusions and analysis are developed from sustained engagement with data analysis and pertinent scholarly literature. Conclusions and analysis contribute to practice/scholarship/interventions, etc.
