It is the 11th century. You embark on a pilgrimage across Europe to one of the many churches that are being built. Stimulated by economic prosperity, political stability, and an increase in population, a building boom of stone churches will endure for the next two centuries.
As you finally approach the church that is the destination of your journey, you are greeted by a large portal (doorway), that is covered with sculpture, it may be on the tympanum, lintel, trumeau or jambs. You are a devout Christian and are humbled by the images before you.
