America’s Most Wanted is a painting created by two artists (Komar and Melamid) in an attempt to determine what the “American People” most value in visual art. Along with a companion piece, America’s Least Wanted, the creation of this work was essentially crowd-sourced by polling Americans about what visual elements they most prefer (colors, subjects, genres, etc.) Although the object itself occupies a traditional art category (painting), should this work be considered art?
