For this assignment, you will read Perrault’s version of “Blue Beard” and Angela Carter’s reimagined version, “The Bloody Chamber.” You will identify themes that exist in both stories. Then you will write an essay making the argument that Carter’s story provides better insight about those themes than Perrault’s version.
Your essay must use evidence from both texts. You may consider changes in plot, character, setting, point of view, or any other elements of fiction in making your argument. You do not need to discuss all the changes made to Perrault’s story–only discuss the changes that make Carter’s version more impactful than Perrault’s. Do not argue that both versions of the story are equal in impact.
