Health information technology (HIT) systems have the potential to improve quality, increase access, and reduce costs, yet many health care provider organizations have been hesitant to adopt HIT systems. It can be time consuming and costly to implement these systems and not every implementation has resulted in a good return on investment. To encourage greater adoption of HIT, to support recent health care reform legislation, and to foster HIT’s ability to improve quality, access, and reduce costs many financial incentives are being offered to health care
providers. As a nurse engaged in advanced nursing practice, it is important to be aware of these mandates and opportunities for integrating HIT.
