Read The book and Write in your own words. According to Vasari, who divided the history of Renaissance art into three phases, the Cinquecento saw the final apotheosis and perfection of the arti di disegni (painting, sculpture and architecture). Using, at least, 4 examples outline the evolution from the Second Age of the Quattrocento to the Third Age, beginning with Leonardo da Vinci and ending with the “divine” Michelangelo. What were the advances made that lead to such perfection and what pitfalls did some artists fall into that Michelangelo managed to avoid? In other words, why was Michelangelo “perfect” while Leonardo, Pontormo, Perugino, Ghirlandaio, Rosso Fiorentino, etc. not? Examples may utilize the literary tropes of Vasari on exemplars of behavior- morally and professionally- that clearly communicate lessons to be learned from previous artists.
