Communication skills in a professional setting

Task 1: Presentation on forms of communication and the communication cycle (AC.1.1, 2.1, 2.2)

Prepare a presentation to analyse how health care professionals might need to use different forms of communication with their clients at different stages in the life. Ensure you include verbal and non-verbal methods and refer to the communication cycle. Give examples in your presentation of how listening skills can be used effectively in a health and social care setting.

Your presentation will last 15-20 minutes and will be given on [19/03/21]. You may use slides – you must not use more than 12 slides with no more than 25 words per slide.

Submit your notes, reference list and, if used, hard copy of your slides.

Task 2: Table on barriers to communication (AC.3.1, 3.2)

Submit a table of common barriers to communication, how these might present themselves and the solutions that should be put in place to ensure effective communication with individuals, along with how these can be implemented. Word limit – 500 words.
Task 3: Written account based on case study (AC. 4.1, 5.1)

Case Study: Mr. Singh is about to move into Holly Bush Care Home having lost his wife a few weeks ago. He is 80 years old and has stated his religion is Sikh. He was having difficulty caring for himself at home since his wife died and there is no other family nearby; he needs assistance with some basic care needs. He can sometimes be hard of hearing, but denies he has an issue hearing or understanding people. You have been assigned to him as one of his main carers and the manager of the care home has asked you to assess his needs/wishes, likes and dislikes.

• What do you need to consider when communicating with Mr Singh to reassure him that he is in a safe place and how can you make him feel at home?

• What kind of concerns do you think he may be having about his new home?

• What communication methods might you use with him to ensure you can effectively communicate with him.

• How might his culture or background affect how you communicate with him?
