FEMA Certificates and Response Paper
Skepticism exists regarding the security of electronic health records. In some cases, it is justified; in others, it is the result of a lack of understanding. What assumptions are evident in the two scenarios below?
A number of staff members on your unit are vehemently opposed to the introduction of electronic health records. Some believe that moving to electronic charting will result in the depersonalization of client care. Others believe that paper-based records are safer because access to them can be strictly controlled. Based on your readings in this unit and the previous one, how would you reply to these concerns?
A client declines to respond to a number of questions when interviewed for the nursing history stating that the information has been collected previously. Based on your knowledge of the state of implementation of the electronic health record in your practice setting, how would you address his concerns? What health information is available? How could your nursing assessment build on his health information that is currently available?
