The Epic of Gilgamesh is regarded as the world’s first piece of epic literature. Even though it was written thousands of years ago, its basic human themes are still relevant today. What basic universal themes does it address and why does it remain compelling today?

VARIATION—If you were a Hollywood director, would you think that the Gilgamesh epic would make good material for a big budget action adventure film (in other words, what basic universal themes does it address that might appeal to audiences today)?
