Argumentative Essay

Instructions:: At the beginning of the essay, you must identify the name of the writer, the name of the letter or article, the claim, and your overall opinion of the piece.
In the body paragraphs, support your opinion/claim by evaluating all three elements of argument (claim, reasons, & evidence) and at least two elements of rhetoric. Each body paragraph should focus on only one element and should begin with a clear topic sentence that supports your claim in some way.
Elements of Argument
1. The effectiveness of the claim
2. The quality and number of the reasons
3. The quality and quantity of the evidence
4. Negative – Any logical fallacies that jeopardize the effectiveness of the argument
Elements of Rhetoric
1. The writer’s awareness of his/her own role as the presenter
2. Awareness of the audiences’ needs
3. Clarity of the message
4. Understanding of the purpose for the piece
5. The tone of the piece
6. Word Choice
7. Use of similes and metaphors
