Watch the 4 videos.  The videos total about 35 minutes of content.  So give yourself some time.

For video #1 write about:

  • What are your values?
  • What are your beliefs around child rearing?
  • Where do your values and beliefs around child rearing come from?

For video #2 write about:

  • What are your thoughts on this TED Talk?
  • Can you relate this this teacher and their point of view?
  • While this teacher is speaking about their experiences as a high school educator, how can you relate this to your experiences working in child care?

For video #3 write about:

  • What about this TED Talk resonates with you?
  • Rita Pierson is giving us “real talk” about working in classrooms with children and adolescents, what is relatable to her story in your work in early childhood?
  • Did you get fired up and motivated to love every child who walks into your classroom? How does that feel?  Elaborate on your emotions.  Let your passion speak.

5 Critical Components that Teachers Need to Know

We need teacher to understand:

  1. The emotional development of children (one-directional) and teachers need to reflect on who they are (personal baggage, implicit baggage)
  2. Teachers need to understand children’s temperament and teachers need to reflect on their own temperament (their inner souls)
  3. Teachers need to understand the family histories (what’s going on in the family, and host families where they are)
  4. What’s going on in our environment? Great opportunities are in the environment – nurture a child’s soul so they feel emotionally safe.

What’s the 5th critical component that teachers need to know?  I have listened to this part a few times and every time I miss it, or Steve Zwolak doesn’t exactly name it.  But if it’s not in his talk, what do you think it is from this clip?
