Assignment 1 Chapters 1,2,4 of book *This assignment is complete*
Select one area from either your professional life (e.g., your current place of employment or the career you hope to have in the future) or from your personal life (e.g., a club in which you are a member, volunteer work that you do, a cause you support, etc.). Review the concepts you have studied in Modules 01-03. Choose at least one concept from each of the three modules and briefly explain how you can use the knowledge you acquired to improve your communication skills in your selected area.
For example, maybe you currently work in a salon as a hairstylist (professional life). You might explain how, as a hairstylist, it is important to achieve shared meaning (Module 01) with your clients in order to cut their hair exactly how they want it. You might also discuss the resource-related conflict (Module 02) that occurs when you and your co-workers need to compete for limited supplies or appointment slots. Finally, you might elaborate on the need to develop good conversation skills (Module 03) in order to initiate, maintain, and end conversations with clients while you are cutting their hair.
Or maybe you volunteer at an animal rescue organization (personal life). You might explain the importance of using the communication channel of social media (Module 01) in order to relay information about adoption days and the pets that are available for adoption. Resource-related conflict (Module 02) may also be a problem here because you don’t receive enough donations to cover all your expenses for food and veterinary care. Finally, you might discuss the simple conflict based on individual differences you encounter (Module 03) when speaking to prospective adopters about the negative aspects of declawing cats.
