Design for hospitality and tourism

Overview

You are required to prepare a narrated presentation (with your narration written in the notes) and report on a design concept of your choice. The concept should be on a hospitality or tourism sectoral element.

The following list of sectoral elements is indicative not prescriptive:

●       Hotel Bedroom and Bathroom

●       Hotel Lobby and Reception

●       Restaurant / Dining Space

●       Bar

●       Visitor Attraction (of your choice)

●       Event Space / Venue

As part of your pitch and report you must prepare a mood board that includes samples and elements of your design choice. You should include a 2 dimensional plan of your design which should outline where the various elements of your design are placed.  You are not expected to fully cost your design; however, you will work towards a theoretical spend that is justified by the business type and target customer (for example, star rating, niche sector or average spend).

Assessment Component 1 – The recorded, narrated presentation

Devise and develop a 10-minute recorded, narrated presentation on your design idea. Your presentation should include the following:

  • An electronic 2-dimensional plan of the proposed design
  • A digital mood board that demonstrates the design elements and should cover the following
  • outline of the business – including customer type and spend
  • explanation of the concept
  • justification of the design elements
  • justification of the indicative spend based upon the business type and customer spend

Assessment Component 2 – The Report

Based upon your pitch, you will prepare a written justification of the design concept. The report will contain academic theory that you have used to justify your approach and further detail on the expenditure with detailed reference made to the costs and the envisaged spend.

The report has a 2000 word limit (not including Executive Summary, contents page or reference list).  As with all assignments, the report will be fully referenced.

The report should follow a standard report format and should include two appendices, being:

  • appendix 1 – Design Plan
  • appendix 2 – Mood Board (in electronic form)

Originality of the Work

The work presented in this assignment must be original and NOT have been submitted for previously assessed work. This is an individual assignment and, as such, syndicated work is NOT acceptable. In the context of this assignment, syndicated work refers to two or more students submitting work which is so alike in ideas, content, wording and/or structure that it goes beyond what might have been a coincidence.

Extensions

Extensions are only granted for extenuating circumstances that are beyond a student’s control. In general, though not exclusively, extenuating circumstances will be of a medical or personal nature affecting the student for a period of time and/or during assessment. Examples include, but are not limited to, a serious illness, accident or bereavement. Independent documented evidence is required in advance of the exam/submission date. Students who consider they have suffered from circumstances beyond their control and who wish to apply for an extension on the grounds of extenuating circumstances should refer to the Extenuating Circumstances Guidelines available on the Quality Website, or from the School Office, via the School Office Student Area on Blackboard. Guidelines and a form is available via the link.
