• You must demonstrate your ability to research by citing at least 3 academic sources and 3 non-academic credible sources within your essay using in-text citations (in the Harvard Style). Discuss your selected sources with your tutor.
• As with all essays, you should structure the essay with an introduction, main body, conclusion and a full reference list.
• Your introduction must introduce the iconic garment you have selected, its original use in history and the contemporary designer/brand you have selected with an outline of how they have reimagined the garment. Also introduce the key academic texts you use.
• Use the first part of the main body to discuss the origins of the iconic garment; the role it has played throughout history and how it reflects the social, political, economic and/or technological movements of its era.
• The second part of the main body must outline your selected contemporary designer/brand and how they have reimagined the iconic garment for contemporary times. It is here where your essay must include critical analysis of the way the iconic garment has been reimagined and recreated. Depending on your research, you could discuss whether the designer’s recreation pays suitable homage to the original iconic garment and in what ways it reflects the differing social, political, economic, technological issues of contemporary times.
• Remember that political, social, economic and technological influences in all societies impact the way designers and consumers think and act. These influences also impact how we see the world and how we understand fashion.
• In your conclusion you must state what the essay has covered and how your research has shed light on the history of this iconic garment and its context within contemporary fashion.
• Your essay must include at least 2 images (with captions) that you discuss in your essay. No more than 5 maximum.
