COLLECTING — art, images, experiences.

When we collect we are drawn to something first for reasons that are visceral. It has beauty; it reminds us of a moment in our lives; it expresses an image that energizes us somehow. These are reasons why people get tattoos. In traditional cultures tattoos have the further meaning of societal identification.

In Thailand, tattoos, such as Sak Yant, carry healing and magical qualities. So too, do images of the Buddha. While it is offensive to get a Buddha tattoo, and in some countries, such as Sri Lanka, it is against the law, wearing an amulet bestows upon the person wearing it something similar to the tattoo.

Using methods of interpretation given in the SLIDE DECK: Interpretation of Buddhist Art, do a comparative interpretation between Amulets and Sak Yant. Watch the Shopping for Buddhas video to begin your writing. For purposes of your illustrations there are many things you can find online.
