Current Event Assignment Instructions
Overview
You will choose a current event/news article (no more than 2 weeks old) that relates to a culture/country in the majority world. As a reminder, majority world is the preferred term for the non-western countries usually classified as “developing countries” (countries in Africa, Asia, South and Central America and the Caribbean). Please note that the United States, Canada, and the UK are not considered majority world countries.
Do not choose a random article; select an article that will allow you to apply the course material in your analysis and response.
Instructions
- Review world news from the week and choose an article that has global significance. Your article should come from one of the approved credible news sources found on the Current Event Assignment page under Current Event Resources. If you would like to use a different source, it must be pre-approved by your instructor prior to submission. Be sure to check the world pages, not just the headlines page, and choose an article relating to the majority world (non-USA, Canada, UK articles) where you can apply what you are learning in the course.
- Your article should come from one of the approved credible news sources included here: “Current Event Resources -World News -CNN -Reuters -BBC -CNA -Aljazeera.” Be sure to check the world pages, not just the headlines page.
- Complete the following in a Word document (review template attachment as well):
- Include your name, course number and section in the top right corner of the document (not in the header).

- List and answer the following questions about the article:
- Give a brief description of the event or the situation along with the historical and political backgrounds contributing to this event.
In this section you should include enough information for the reader to understand what the article is about without actually having to read the article. Remember to include the historical and political background.
- Share why this article interests you.
In this section you will briefly explain the reason this article appealed to you.
- Briefly discuss the implications of this event/story LOCALLY (where the event/situation occurred not where you are located) and GLOBALLY.
In this section you need to briefly explain the repercussions of this event in the local community. You will then briefly explain the potential or actual influence/effect this event could have in the global community. What countries could be impacted or influence by this event?
- As believers, how can we respond to this situation?
In this section you should apply concepts/strategies learned in the course material to explain how the Church can respond to events such as this in order to further its mission of making disciples.
- Your answers to the questions should total at least 500 words but no more than 800 words.
- Include a word count at the bottom of the assignment. Please note that student information, article title and link, the questions themselves, and footnotes do not count towards your word count.
- The assignment should be completed according to the current Turabian formatting guidelines and should not include a title page (Times New Roman, 12-pt font, double spaced, 1-inch margins).
- Minimum of one citation from “PERSPECTIVES on the world Christian movement: A Reader, Fourth Edition by Ralph D. Winter and Steven C. Hawthorne”. This book is free online. Remember to use current Turabian style footnotes when citing your source(s).
