Essay (55 pts. total, 18.33 pts. each)
Respond to the following questions with well-crafted essays of at least 1 page each:
- European colonialism from the 1400s to the 1900s in Africa, Asia, and the Americas is a central theme of this modern world history course. How did different European empires and nations (those we’ve covered so far) justify invasions and colonial projects, and how did those justifications change over time and according to context? How did Indigenous (Native) peoples view and respond to those invasions and colonial projects?
- Discuss the Transatlantic slave trade that lasted from the 1400s through the 1800s. How did this system differ from earlier forms of slavery in history? What was the Middle Passage? And how did the labor of millions of enslaved Africans drive “economic growth” and produce such incredible wealth for some Europeans and Euro-Americans?
- What do you see as the major commonalities and distinctions between the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) and other revolutionary and independence movements in the Atlantic World from the 1770s to the 1820s? And discuss the Haitian Revolution’s impact on subsequent independence movements and on the institution of slavery in the Americas during the 1800s.
