Research in Education

(1.) Research Question: (use this content below RQ)

Research Topic
The topic under investigation is Public School Issues within Urban Communities.

Research Problem
The issue to be explored through this research project will be Low Student Achievement within the Urban Communities. “Urban public schools are often filled with students and their families who are living with severe economic disadvantages” (Hudley 2013). “Low educational achievement is the lack of grades which a student gets in tests in all subjects” (2015).

Research Question
This research project will answer the following question, “What effect does the lack of parental engagement have on low-student achievement at Kennedy Middle School?” The independent variable is the lack of parental engagement. The dependent variable is low-student achievement at Kennedy Middle School. This would be a quantitative study.

Proposed Sample
The sample for this study would include students from Kennedy Middle School. Ideally, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade would be included and consist of approximately 550 students. “The teachers at Kennedy Middle School would be included as well and consist of nearly 40 teachers; moreover, the teacher retention is currently seventy-one percent” (2020-2021).

Rationale
Utilizing strategic and intentional support systems as a way to close the gap on low student achievement within urban schools is an essential topic for a plethora of reasons. “Poverty and challenging behaviors directly affect academic achievement” (Lacour and Tissington 2011, p. 522). As a competent Educational Administrator, the goal for every student is to have a positive outcome and to become self-confident and academically successful.
