Biblical Profile

MINOR PROPHETS

BIBLE 200

Each of you will select one of the minor prophet listed below to research your assigned book using only the indicated pages of the Sumney textbook and the corresponding Bible Project video which may be found here: (https://bibleproject.com/explore/book-overviews/). No other sources should be consulted.

Students will write a 2-page report in their own words on their chosen books using the information provided in Sumney and in Bible Project videos. Each paper should address the following:

  • Authorship – Who wrote the text insofar as that can be known? What can be known about the author and how do we know it?
  • Date – When was the book written insofar as that can be known? What evidence suggests this date or date range? Describe in as much detail as possible what was going on in Israelite history and culture when this book was written.
  • Occasion – What social or historical circumstances prompted the author to write this text? What problems was Israel facing? What/who does the prophet criticize, praise, or encourage?
  • Purpose – What did the author intend to accomplish by writing this text?
  • Theological Themes – What are the main theological themes found in the text? How are they expressed (e.g., judgement oracles, visions, prophetic signs, etc.)? Be as specific as possible.

Use complete sentences and your best grammar that addresses those five topics in that order. Your report should be completed in a Word Document using 12-point Times Roman font and should use your own words. Do not copy sentences directly from the textbook or the video. But, so long as you stick to those two sources, no citations are required. A grading rubric is provided on Brightspace for this assignment. Submit the assignment on Brightspace by 11:59 pm on the due date listed on your syllabus.

Students who plagiarize from any source (print or online) or copy from another student’s paper will fail the class. Do whatever you can to avoid the impression of cheating. Do not consult unapproved sources. If you have friends in the class, choose to write on different prophets.
