Correlational Vs Experimental Design
Correlational and experimental designs can be used to study different aspects of a particular variable of concern. In the correlational study, the goal is to study how variables can change in relation to each other. On the other hand, an experimental study incorporates the manipulation of an independent variable to understand how it affects a dependent variable (Grant MacEwan Community College, 2022). Thus, in investigating the link between academic performance and either studying alone or in a group, the correlational study can be used. The design of the study includes taking the information of the individuals in the two groups. In the study, there will be two sets of respondents, those studying alone and those studying in a group. The two groups will be subjected to an equal number of hours of studying and use similar subjects. At the end of the learning period, a summative test from their course will be given. The results from the summative test will then be used to show the correlation between studying alone and in a group. The group which will perform better will help in confirming or rejecting the hypothesis.
In an experimental design, a randomized control trial can be used. An experimental group will involve the individuals studying alone while the control group will involve those studying in a group. The two groups can then be subjected to the same learning content, for the same number of hours, and given a similar summative test. The outcomes from the experimental and control, groups will help show the difference in performance between the two groups.
A correlational study will be the most effective in this case. There is no manipulation of variables which increases the chances of collecting data from the natural environment. Also, besides the design, existing data can be used. Learners who study alone and those who study in groups can submit their marks and a correlation can be established.
