Critical Reading Responses
For this assignment, you are to select ONE of the secondary sources from your Annotated Bibliography #1 list. You should review the source again, very carefully, to clearly determine (1) the main point of the source, (2) some of the major issues raised in it, and (3) how the source relates to your research plan.

Each response should be about 300 words (one paragraph, one page, typed, double spaced). These responses should be a critical exploration of the source.

The reading response should ask critical questions—and explore possible answers—about the issues involved in the source. Responses should display careful thinking, beyond just surface details like summary or description. For these Critical Responses, you should consider that your objective is to demonstrate how the researched source supports your main idea for your project. Responses that explore a single issue or a couple of issues in “depth” will receive better grades than those that raise several issues, but only superficially. I am asking for a close reading in these responses; I am asking you to suggest how the source fits into the framework of one or two of the various issues raised in your thesis. Overall, the objective of these responses is to provide you with an avenue to build and demonstrate your critical thinking on your research topic.

The objective of these responses is to:
1. Provide an examination of how the secondary source considered for this exercise fits into your overall plan for the research project. You should provide an ample discussion of the source and apply it to your thesis to show how it will allow you to accomplish your stated goal in the thesis. Note: Do not merely summarize the source. Instead, you should discuss how it connects to your thesis.

2. Help you be more selective about the sources you choose for use in your research project. With a clear understanding of your plan (thesis statement), you will better gage the impact the secondary source will have on you supporting/arguing the thesis.

3. Help you to critically reflect on the thesis of the project. The secondary source should allow you to further demonstrate effective critical thinking on the subject.

4. Employ MLA citation (you must cite the course using correct and current MLA format). Note: Please provide your bibliographic citation at the top of the page. You should present your Revised Topic, Revised Thesis, and Source Citation at the top of the page.

5. Demonstrate effective use of Paraphrase and Summary techniques. Although quotes are allowed, you should consider using paraphrase and summary more as these methods encourage the interpretation and comprehension of the readings.
