“Girl, Interrupted” by Susanna Kaysen
The review should be at least 12 to 15 typed (double-spaced) pages, and must be written in APA style (5 points). The following are guidelines for the review.
1. Summarize the book (no more than two pages). 10 points
2. Diagnose the main character (and other important characters if any) according to the DSM-5-TR. Explain in detail why you gave the diagnoses. Go through each of the DSM criteria and explain how your character has those symptoms. Be sure to discuss psychosocial stressors the character is dealing with, and the potential impact of culture on the person’s illness. (at least two pages). 25 points
3. Write a 5-page research review of one of the disorders that the main character was diagnosed with. Include information about the incidence, causes, and treatments of the disorder. You should not cover symptoms in this section, this section should address other issues related to this disorder you chose. Be sure to include at least 2 scientific journal articles in this section of the paper. 20 points
4. Identify and give examples of at least two defense mechanisms that one of the characters’ employs. One page. 10 points
5. Describe the main character’s behavior according to at least TWO different theoretical perspectives (e.g., biological, humanistic, etc). Be sure not to just define what the perspective is. You have to use the components of the theory to explain why the person is behaving the way they do. At least three pages. 20 points.
6. Was the character treated? If yes, then describe how, and whether you disagree or agree with the treatment approach. If no, do you think they should have been treated, and how? At least one page. 5 points.
7. You can be creative and add anything else about why the character was interesting to you, what you learned from this assignment, etc.
Be sure that you divide your paper into these sections so that it is clearly organized (5 points). More details and information about the paper will be discussed at length in class.
