Psychological and social aspects of dementia
Identify the psychological and social aspects of dementia (e.g., impact on social functioning, what kind of support is available if any, prevalence in the community, etc.). How common is this disorder/condition? Is it well-known? Do people tend to “spot” this or is it a “hidden” condition?
Your findings will be supported by at least three to four (3-4) relevant journal articles, which will be turned in along with your ten to twelve (10-12) page paper.
- Complete initial research related to the biological aspects of the disease (e.g., underlying contributing factors, mechanism of action, contribution of personal health habits, genetics, etc.). You should be prepared to describe what the disorder/condition is, how a person may acquire or develop it, and include risk factors, warning signs, and biological changes as a result of the disorder/condition. Information on how the disorder/condition may affect diverse populations is also encouraged.
- develop a sample Stages of Change Model for a person with this disorder. Include or consider one (1) health-promoting behavior that is either a treatment or preventative factor for the condition, and elaborate on what considerations may happen at each stage. This is an opportunity to be creative and think about the barriers that may exist. For example, if you choose diabetes, a simple intervention is to add in some exercise every day which can prevent blood sugar spikes. What would going through the stages of change look like for your “imagined” person. You are also free to research and pick something known to you already, but please leave personally identifiable information out of your paper.
