John Henry Cardinal Newman The Idea of a University
150-200 words in length. Roughly two (2) paragraphs. Do not write in first person.
In your own words, explain why Newman believes a gentleman should cultivate “gentleness and effeminacy (tenderness) of feeling, you know, get in touch with his feminine side without any controversy. Please, no critical Mombo-jumbo, and again, use your own words to explain. That means you should have read and understood what you’ve read, so that you can explain it without regurgitating Newman word for word. A paraphrase or two is okay, but should be minimal at best, and parenthetically cited within your paragraph. However, I don’t want to read your discussion and feel like I’m re-reading Newman. Worse than that, I don’t want to feel like I’m reading someone’s critique who has studied Newman as their life’s work. Understand? You are an intelligent person. You know what your take-away is. At one time or another you’ve probably even considered how you feel about this whole man, feminine side, controversy. So, what has Newman added to that for you? Discuss it as though you are explaining it to a friend so that he or she/he might understand.
