Hello everyone, -CP
Nurses are expected to be responsible, honest, have integrity, treat every patient with equality and have the desire to prevent and alleviate suffering. Nursing is a profession that is rooted in professional ethics and ethical values, and performance is based on such values. Nursing is ranked as one of the most ethical and honest professions. Our values are goals and beliefs that establish behavior and provide a basis for our decision making. As nurses we face many day-to-day problems and complex decisions each day.
Nursing is both challenging and rewarding at the same time. With that being said, we are held to a high standard of professionalism. Recently, I encountered a challenging situation at work with a charge nurse. I recently switched departments in my hospital and ever since I transferred to the Emergency Department, I felt some sort of hatred towards me by one of my charge nurses. I was helping my colleagues in the Resuscitation Bay, and I felt the charge nurse following me around. She finally came up to me and scolded me that I was not working and that I am not allowed to just do what I want. At that very moment I felt embarrassed and looked down upon me. There were many nurses and doctors around and I felt that what she did was extremely unprofessional. I was very frustrated and angry because this could have been resolved in a private room or space. I asked her if we could speak in a private room because I did not respect how the situation was handled. We went into a private room to talk but it did not end well. For weeks she did not acknowledge or speak to me. Whenever she needed to deliver a message to me, she would have someone else speak to me. It was extremely uncomfortable for me to deal with this every time I worked with her. A workplace environment should never be this way. This situation made me truly realize that respect and equality are critical core values in the nursing profession.
We come across people from all walks of life daily. I believe that no matter where we come from, we should all be treated with the same equality and respect. With respect, if everyone is treated equally and with respect for one another then everyone should be able to work together, solve problems, and feel cared for. Giving respect to every worker provides a better work atmosphere that helps create a conducive work environment where employees feel safe and happy.
