Berlant defines citizenship as “a relation among strangers who learn to feel it as a common identity based on shared historical, legal, or familial connection to a geopolitical space” and that “[m]any institutional and social practices are aimed at inducing a visceral identification of personal identity with nationality” (37). Give an example of an institutional and/or social practice that induces identification of the personal with nationality, explaining how it does this, and the implications/ramifications of that inducing. Some examples: reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, attending a high school football game, festivals, food. Feel free to discuss non-US examples.
