Values can be defined as standards of behavior that individuals live by. They guide us in our decision-making. They generally come from our culture and our life experience and define how we think life should be. You probably know people that share values that are like yours and others whose values are quite different from yours—most likely because they do not share the same life experience and/or culture.

The authors of the Woodside and McClam text identify five values that they believe most important for guiding human services professionals:
