For the large paper for Part 1, follow both the syllabus, and the paper writing guidelines to come up with an argumentative paper on one of the topics covered in the first part of the Hinman text, (chapters 1-5). Papers must have 1″ margins, and use a 12 pt. font.
Take one side of the topic/issue and argue from that position. Keep in mind to use the appropriate type of major ethical theory as the backup and foundation of your arguments. Will you argue that Abortion or Euthanasia are ethical and allowable, or unethical? Will you pick the Death Penalty? Will you argue from a Kantian position that all life is sacred, or from a utilitarian one where the best for the masses at large is considered most ethical.
Keep in mind that these papers are argumentative and will have several different claims to backup their position (a paper of this size has four or five paragraphs/claims that back up the thesis with one or two backups per claim). Also, the best of these papers will also find the most common argument against your position, and then shoot it down with backup from your position. This will greatly enhance your argument. For example, if you pick Abortion, and you are against it, then you would cite the most common argument about why those who are for abortion believe the way they do, and then refute that best pro-abortion position. Of course, you would have back-up for all of these positions.
You may “recycle” arguments that you have already used as your arguments (and even your responses) if you like.
This paper must be 3-5 pages long and have a minimum of 3 sources. One should be the book, and one should be philosophical in nature and the third can be for informational purposes, statistics etc. Use the syllabus and the paper writing guidelines on more about sourcing.
