Interview someone who lives in a small town, farm or ranch. This can be a face-to-face or telephone interview with a classmate, relative or friend. In your summary report respond to the questions below.

  • Briefly describe the person’ background, the rural community in which they live (age, gender, and position in the family and community)
  • What does being rural mean for his/her health (or family’s health)?
  • In what ways does he/she think rural folk are different from (or like) city folk?
  • What are the main health problems encountered by people in his/her community/area?
  • What health services does he/she think are most urgently needed? Who provides emergency care to local residents?
  • Ask the individual to describe his/her experiences in accessing health care the last time someone was seriously ill in their family (or, if not in their family, in their community).
  • Who did they first consult? Who decided when to see the professional? How long did it take them to get to the hospital or doctor?
  • How do his/her comments fit with the content in your text and your peers’ comments?
  • Elaborate how your response validates, corresponds or conflicts with the assigned textbook content?
