The Frankenfolio

You are tasked with creating a portfolio featuring elements from Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein. Choose one task from each category to complete for your Frankenstein portfolio. All four of the assignments must on one Word Document and submitted together.

Visual

  • Create a detailed page from Victor’s lab journal. Include doodles, random thoughts, plans, etc.
  • Draw a large, detailed picture of the creature based precisely on the description in the novel. (That means no green monsters with bolts in their necks.)
  • Find a world map and label all the areas where the action takes place in the novel. Draw lines that indicate the directions of movement. Include some explanatory labels on the map.
  • Make a detailed collage that contains pictures and words relating to ideas and events from the novel.

Creative Writing

  • Write a one-page (typed and double-spaced) diary entry from Victor’s point of view immediately following the Creature’s “birth.”
  • Create a one-page (double-spaced) do-it-yourself manual on how to create your own Creature, based specifically on the descriptions of Victor’s work.
  • Write lyrics to a complete song about Frankenstein. This could be an original rap or song, or you can take an existing tune and write new lyrics (Weird Al-style). You can use humor here.

Real World Connection

  • Choose five songs that relate to ideas or themes in the novel. Include the lyrics for each song and explain the reasoning for why you chose each song.
  • Find a newspaper or magazine article about a current bioethical issue. Print it out and on a separate sheet of paper, have each group member explain his or her views about the issue in a few sentences. Identify what connects this issue to Frankenstein.
  • Write a one-page (typed and double-spaced) explanation about how we live in a Frankenstein-like culture when it comes to altering ourselves to be more “superhuman” or “ideal,” and the positive and negative consequences that are associated with it. You can use personal and/or celebrity examples.

List

  • Make a list of ten questions that you would ask one of the characters. These need to be related to the novel.
  • List five merits of Victor and five “sins” or negative attributes that we could associate with him.
  • List ten instances of the gothic atmosphere that appear in the novel.
  • List ten emotions that appear in the novel and briefly explain the events they connect with
