Community health
Students must attend and observe one meeting of a group dealing with economics, social needs/assets, or a governmental body serving the population. The meeting can be a virtual or recorded meeting. Students will focus on two (2) of the items listed below:
1. Economic influences (funding for services, community improvements, etc)
2. Societal influences (social services for the community, etc)
3. Policy/political influences (policy for community improvements, etc)
Ideas for community meetings:
Local or state public health department
Town or city government meeting
Issue-specific organizations/coalitions-local chapters (American Red Cross, food pantries, homeless shelters, American Heart Association, etc)
Local Action Coalitions
State government meetings
Church meetings that focus on the community
Paper Requirements:
The paper needs to include the following information:
1. Purpose of the group*
2. How members of the group are chosen*
3. Group accountability*
4. Discuss two of the three listed influences (economic, societal, political) addressed at the meeting
5. Benefit to the community regarding this organization’s meetings
* This information will likely need to be obtained outside of the meeting, such as content from the group’s website or personal communication from a member. This must be cited in the paper, including citation as personal communication.
