After you’ve had a chance to read the Guest chapter on Religion and Review the PPT, please respond to the following:
There is strong evidence to show that spirituality has existed long before humans existed (Neanderthal rites and burial practices).
We, humans, have developed over the course of our own history many ways to seek spirituality and connect to the divine – all through many religions and theologies, faith practices, rituals, and religious and secular philosophies, etc.
In addition, humans over the thousands of years have always questioned the existence of or the human need for the divine.
In essence – the divine – regardless if it is its acceptance and rejection, has been a huge part of our human history and human thought.
So do you think we need religion or faith to be moral? Can we be “Good without God” Is the need for religion a social good?
Certainly many, many people and many ideas and actions have been done in the name of “God” which have tried to heal our divisions and bring peace. However, there’s a flip side to this as well.
There are no easy answers to these questions. Try your best and remember to THINK LIKE AN ANTHROPOLOGIST!!!!
