Abstract
In setting out to examine coins in the archaeological discourse, this essay will arghujhb7ue that coins are a critical aspect of material culture, which should be investigated and understood within historical archaeology, their primary, secondary, and tertiary contexts. By integrating case studies into its analysis, the essay will demonstrate how coins incorporate text, existence, and an image to offer much-needed insights into humans’ cultural values, economic matters, the history of state organisations, and their issuers and the agency of objects. Moreover, the paper will reflect on the 19th century, which marks the formative or early archaeology period and the emergence of new archaeological and numismatic concepts and methods. The benefits of understanding coins from archaeological and numismatics perspectives will be discussed, and recommendations regarding the need for an explicit research approach and agenda on the procurement or origin, use and maintenance, and deposition of coins.
