Choose one of the following:
1. Analyze how and why the man and boy try to maintain an idea of good in a world where people no longer work together, but instead all are pitted against all in a struggle for survival.
2. Analyze how and why McCarthy comments on civilizational and environmental death, the destruction of the human world of cities, towns, etc…, and nature itself.
3.For this option, analyze how the man and the boy persevere in light of horrific conditions and the often inconceivable horror they experience, like the scene with the pregnant lady. What is the role of “the fire” in keeping them moving? Be sure to define your understanding of the fire.
4. Analyze the reasoning why conflict appears between the man and the boy given how one is committed to keeping them alive, while the other also wants them to do good in the process.
5. Analyze how belief works in the story through an example in the text. You could focus on belief in God, belief in the personification of God (the boy is God according to the man), belief in the idea that humans are sacred (in a non-religious way), worthy of respect and reverence, or the belief in the ability to communicate with absent presences, the boy to the man after his death.
