Write a critical review focusing on the impact of ageing on a specific disease / condition and its diagnosis and treatment. The selected disease/condition should be related to your programme, and the review should address the following points:
– The role of ageing in the development and/ or prognosis of the disease.
– How does ageing influence the diagnosis of this disease, i.e. How does age influence the selection
of the diagnostic methods for this disease?
How does ageing influence the treatment/ management of this disease, i.e. How does age influence
the selection of the treatment/ management options of this disease?
Here is the suggested structure
For example, if the review will be about “The effect of Ageing on Disease/Condition A and its
diagnosis and management”Abstract: (~250 Words): Short background and a summary of what the review will cover and the key
findings. Abstract normally doesn’t contain references.
Keywords: Select 5 keywords that are relevant to your review
Introduction: (~200 words)
The introduction should cover the following points.
A relevant background about the prevalence of the disease in different age group, and why age is an important factor to look at with regards to disease A. Also, you need to show why your review is different from previous reviews, and finally, what are the points you will cover in this review.
1. The impact of ageing on the development and/ or prognosis of Disease/Condition A. (~800
words)
You need to critically review several primary research papers that looked at the influence of ageing on the pathophysiology and the prognosis of Disease/Condition A. What ae the potential mechanisms by which ageing could influence Disease/Condition A development and/or prognosis.
2. The impact of ageing on the diagnosis of Disease/Condition A (~700 words)
In this section, you need to evaluate the impact of ageing on one or two of standard diagnostic
method for Disease/Condition A, which could be either a clinical and/ or laboratory diagnostic
method. It might worth looking at NICE Guidelines or other relevant Guidelines for more information about the diagnostic methods for this Disease/Condition A To demonstrate a good evaluation skills, you need to use primary research to evaluate how age could influence the selection, and interpretation of the diagnostic methods, and possibly if age influences the sensitivity and specificity of different diagnostic methods for Disease/Condition A. In this section and if relevant, data extraction from the primary research in form of tables and figures
could be a good way to improve the communication of your assignment.
3. The impact of ageing on treatment of Disease/Condition A (~700 words)
In this section, you need to evaluate the impact of ageing on the outcomes of different treatment options for Disease/Condition A. To demonstrate good evaluation, you need to use primary research to evaluate how age could influence the selection of different treatment options. This ideally by looking at the studies comparing the efficacy and safety of treatment options in different age groups and how that could be explained.
In this section and if relevant, data extraction from the primary research in form of tables and
figures could be a good way to improve the communication of your assignment.
It is also recommended to focus on maximum 3 treatment options- again it might worth looking at worth looking at NICE Guidelines or other relevant Guidelines for more information about the treatment option for this Disease/Condition A
– Conclusion: (~250 Words):
You should write briefly the key findings and what you have concluded after writing this review, Conclusion should be derived from what you have previously discussed in the body of the assignment, so don’t generate new points that haven’t been discussed earlier in your review.
By the end of your conclusion, don’t forget to put a structured future recommendation, for example, a suggestion for a research question with a specific study design that will help in better understanding of the impact of ageing on Disease/Condition A will be highly appreciated.
References: Reference List as APA 6
Word count:
3000 words
Tables and figures, and references list are excluded from the word count.
Intext citations are included in the word count.
Heavy texted tables and figures will be included in the word count. To avoid this please, use
abbreviations, and symbols in your tables and figures, and add the abbreviations list and what each
symbol indicates below each table and each figure. Please, don’t directly copy and paste text
from the study’s results or abstract.

Recommended Format:
The assignments should be written in the third person and in form of discursive paragraphs no lists
or bullet points allowed
Title: Bold with font size 14
Headings and Subheadings: Bold with font size 11 or 12
Title, Abstract and keywords should be written in single column
Assignment body should be written in two columns
Font size: 11 or 12
Line spacing: 1
Paragraph spacing: 1.5
Tables: Each table should have a number and a title that placed above the table. Large tables need to be presented in a landscape layout.
Figures: Each figure should have a number and a title that placed under the figure. For any copied figure reference must be provided.
Each table and graph should be self-explanatory so if you have any abbreviation, the full term of the abbreviation should be written under that table or the figure.
You must refer to each table number and each figure number in the text.
Abbreviations: Introduce every abbreviation before using it in the text. The first time you use the full term, put the abbreviation in parentheses after the full term. Thereafter, you can stick to using the abbreviation. E.g. Body Mass Index (BMI)
