While interstate wars have declined since the end of the Cold War, ongoing disputes and escalation of tensions between states continue to threaten the outbreak of conflict. For this paper, identify two states of interest to you that are experiencing a dispute and/or escalating tensions. Your paper will address the main question: is war likely to occur (or recur/persist) between these two countries? First, briefly define interstate war and describe the bargaining model of war, including how war can result from information and commitment problems. Second, describe to what extent these dynamics are present in your conflict of interest. Third, make the case for whether or not you believe war is more or less likely to occur given this discussion. Conclude by considering what steps could be taken to lessen the risk of conflict.
