The Learning Journal is a self-reflection assignment that encourages you to consider your own personality, perceptions, and behaviour with respect to various organizational behaviour concepts covered in this course.
This assignment provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate the achievement of the following course learning outcomes:
- Identify various theories of personality, perception, motivation, and emotions and their impact on individual behaviour and organizational effectiveness.
- Apply the theoretical concepts/frameworks of organizational behaviour to real-life situations in the workplace.
Write a self-reflection based on the organizational concepts identified below (Parts A-E). In paragraph format, incorporate your responses to each guiding question. Describe each concept in your own words and provide examples of how the concept relates to your professional or personal life.
Part A: Big Five Personality Traits (Module 2)
- Define, in your own words, the terms of each of the Big Five Personality Traits.
- To what degree does each trait apply to you? You are encouraged to complete the Big Five Personality Assessment and comment on your results.
- Provide at least one detailed example of how the Big Five Personality Traits relate to the role you play in your professional or personal life.
Part B: Locus of Control (Module 2)
- Define, in your own words, the terms: internal locus of control and external locus of control
- Explain your locus of control. You are encouraged to complete the Locus of Control & Attributional Style Test and comment on your results.
- Provide at least one detailed example of how your locus of control relates to the role you play in your professional or personal life.
Part C: Cultural Diversity (Module 3)
- Describe, in your own words, Canadian cultural diversity and how it impacts the workplace.
- How does Canadian cultural diversity apply to you?
- Provide at least one detailed example of how Canadian cultural diversity influences the role you play in your professional or personal life. Consider how it affects your expectations, interactions, decision-making, and other aspects of your job role or personal life.
Part D: Employee Motivation/Engagement (Module 4)
- Identify the motivation theory that resonates most with you with respect to your role in the workplace? Describe the theory and explain how it relates to you.
- Has your employer designed your job to encourage engagement? If yes, justify your response. If not, how could your employer modify your job design to increase your engagement?
- Comment on your experience with performance appraisals and the rewards and recognition that you have received as an employee. Which rewards motivated you the most? How could your organization have done a better job of using rewards and recognition as a motivational tool?
Part E: Organizational Communication (Module 6)
- Describe, in your own words, communication channels and the related concept of “information richness.”
- Which is/are your preferred communication channel(s)? Explain your response.
- Provide at least one detailed example of a situation, either professional or personal, which demonstrates your use of different communication channels.
- How could you use information richness to be more effective in your own communications?
