You are gong to write a paper about one of the most contentious, even to this day, aspects of American public life that is, the appropriate balance between Federal and State power. This argument is a very old one and does not just go back to the beginning, but in many ways to be BEFORE the beginning. After the writing of a new Constitution in 1787, which resulted from the failure of the Articles of Confederation, many thought that it would address and solve a certain set of existing problems (Federalists). Many others believed it would allocate far too much power to the Central Government at the expense of the States (anti-Federalists).
