Tragedy and Race

Assessment 2 is an independent essay. Working with your seminar leader, and the themes and texts from the module (or elsewhere), you will develop your own topic and submit a 2,000-word essay.

You are not limited to module texts, but your primary material should be performance based (whether written play-text or actual screen/stage performance).
There is no minimum or maximum number of plays that you may write about.

It depends a bit on the sort of play you want If you want an Ancient Greek play, Medea is probably the best. If you want something from the Renaissance, then Tragedy of Mariam would work, and there’s also Othello. If you prefer a modern tragedy, there’s Death and the King’s Horseman, or Emilia, from the module, or there’s lots of other playwrights, such as Susan-Lori Parks.
