 Art or architecture

Watch the 7 videos below and select 4 to write about. Write 5 significant things that you learned about each work of art or architecture. For example: What was the subject matter? What was its purpose/function? How was it a reflection of the culture that made it? What was the historical context? What was the religious context? Make sure to identify the title of the video and respond with 5-7 full sentences in paragraph form. Convey the most essential information in an objective manner leach video response is worth 5 points).

All 7 videos are about works listed on your study guide and there will be questions about them on your final exam. All works on the study guide are also covered in your book but these short videos are very informative. The supplementary reading listed below the videos is optional but really worth reading to further your understanding of the material.

Tell us who your chosen artist is, the title of their work, and what made you choose their piece. Provide us with a picture of the original work and then a picture of the work you created. Tell us about your piece, what materials you used, and why you chose to use the materials you did.

Discussion Post

Instructions given by professor:

READ AND UNDERSTAND WHAT IS NEEDED BEFORE ACCEPTING.
In the PBS video we saw this week she discussed the commonly heard declaration of “I could do that”. This is often used in response to Contemporary Art. It can seem simple or as if not a lot of thought went into the piece. This week I want you to go through your textbook and any videos/powerpoints we have seen so far and find an artwork that makes you think “I could do that”. Then using any material you have in your home (it doesn’t necessarily have to be “real” art materials) do your best to create a work inspired by that piece. The materials you use can literally be anything, you could paint with coffee or make a sculpture with an empty paper towel tube, you could even use your phone and any clothing you own to recreate a portrait, remake a master. Anything you already own that isn’t an essential item. Tell us who your chosen artist is, the title of their work, and what made you choose their piece. Provide us with a picture of the original work and then a picture of the work you created. Tell us about your piece, what materials you used, and why you chose to use the materials you did.

Write a 300 word response plus a picture of the artwork you created.

What did this artist hope to accomplish? Were preliminary sketches a normal part of the artist’s process? How did other perspectives and contexts affect their subject matter, technique, concept, etc.?

Mind of an Artist

Instructions
Critical thinking helps us learn, develop new ideas, and formulate theories. “Critical thinking” has been defined as “self-guided, self-disciplined thinking which attempts to reason at the highest level of quality in a fair-minded way” (The Foundation for Critical Thinking website). Sometimes artists use drawing as a visual process of critical thinking, allowing them to see their subject from copious perspectives within numerous contexts. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the Renaissance era drawings of artists like Leonardo da Vinci or Michelangelo, or in the nature studies of Albrecht Dürer. Critical thinking can also be found in the schematic and preliminary drawings of modern artists, including sculptors and architects.

Step 1: Research
Using the CCCOnline Library Art Research Guide and sources, the sites listed below, or comparable sites, research Renaissance drawings as a basis for your essay. Major artists of the Renaissance produced large quantities of “cartoons”—sketches used as studies for larger works. Although these drawings were not usually considered art at the time, many did survive and are now proudly exhibited in museum collections.

o Blogs are not typically considered scholarly or professional publications since there is no professional or academic peer review. Anyone can publish a blog, irregardless of his or her credentials and with or without proofreading and editing. However, after careful review by subject-matter experts, this blog is considered to be of the quality required for scholarly publication. Carol Hendricks, the author/publisher, is an art museum professional with a masters degree in Art History, and the content appears accurate and professionally written.

Step 2: Writing
Essay (800 – 1200 Words)
First, insert an image file of the Renaissance preparatory drawing you have chosen to write about. Review the information regarding “thesis statements” in Module 1 Read/View resource, Writing Skills Development: Developing a Thesis Statement. In your thesis statement, identify the artist who created the drawing, the subject of the drawing, and explain how the artist is using the art as part of their critical thinking process. In your essay’s body paragraphs, explain what the artist was studying. Begin your draft by considering the following questions:
• What did this artist hope to accomplish?
• Were preliminary sketches a normal part of the artist’s process?
• How did other perspectives and contexts affect their subject matter, technique, concept, etc.?
• Give a specific example from your chosen image to support your statement.

Conclude by explaining why critical thinking furthers this artist’s studies, plans, and goals, and how drawing aids them in this process.

Step 3: Submit
Before you submit your assignment to the Assignment Submission Folder, review the instructions once again to make sure you have answered the required questions and provide relevant support.

Write an in-depth Formal Analysis of at least one art/architectural piece relating to the topic (Great Pyramid, Egypt).

Unit 3 Project

Formal Analysis
Write an in-depth Formal Analysis of at least one art/architectural piece relating to the topic (Great Pyramid, Egypt). You can widen your analysis beyond pure description to include discussion /research of the formal qualities of the piece. You may also choose include images.

This section should be 500-700 words. Make sure to use your own words. Cite any sources you use and add sources in MLA format at the end of your section.

Is the composition dynamic? What adds to the quality of the composition? How is the texture and figure integrated? Does the texture feel dimensional, like you can imagine what it feels like?

Discussion 6: Divided Self

This drawing introduces combining reality and imagination, and working from source images. It will build on the technique of cross contour from the beginning of this module,

Materials Needed

  • 1 sheet 14″x17″ drawing paper
  • Graphite
  • White eraser
  • Click eraser

Initial Post

Your initial post will be a posted jpeg of your finished drawing. Complete the following steps to create your drawing:

  • After completing your texture sketchbook assignment and your divided self thumbnails sketchbook assignment, determine which texture or textures you will use in your portrait.
  • Take a selfie with a dynamic pose. Make sure to take your selfie under good lighting. If you have the capability to print this out on plain printer paper at a larger size, it will be helpful, but if you have to work from your phone or computer, that’s okay too.
  • Referring to your photo and thumbnails, sketch out the basic forms and contours of your portrait.
  • Use cross contour lines to map out the contours of your face. Determine to which areas you will add your texture. You should have about half your portrait true to life, and the other half the texture should appear to be a part of your body. This does not need to be an exact half and half. You don’t need to just divide your portrait down the center. Consider following a contour line to make a more natural progression from “reality” to “imagination”.
  • Draw in your texture, paying attention to contour, value, and mark. The size of your texture should vary based on the contours, and the value should also vary based on the overall form.
  • Pay attention to relative value – meaning that in areas of shadow, the value pattern within your texture will be darker overall, and in areas of highlight, the value pattern of your texture will be lighter overall.
  • Post finished final drawing to the discussion board.

Response Post

Respond to at least 4 peers, answering the following questions:

  • Is the composition dynamic? What adds to the quality of the composition?
  • How is the texture and figure integrated?
  • Does the texture feel dimensional, like you can imagine what it feels like?
  • What are your assumptions about this person based on the texture they have used?
  • What is the most successful component of the drawing? Where is an area that you are particularly intrigued by? What is the visual quality that creates or adds to that component? Use appropriate visual vocabulary.
  • What area could be improved? What visual quality detracts from the overall drawing? Use appropriate visual vocabulary.

To ensure everyone in class receives feedback, you may not respond to someone who already has 3 responses, unless all. posts have at least 3 responses.)

Remember to respond using the posed guidelines for constructive criticism. You must point out the moments of success, and those that could be improved. We can only help one another succeed if we are honest with our responses. However, be especially mindful if you create a written response, as there is no tone of voice to give clues to your intent with your comment.

What problems or benefits do you think may arise from Reynold’s approach to domestic architecture? Should ecological concerns be important to homeowners & architects? Why or why not?

Deforestation

The concern over deforestation has created a demand for greener construction materials and novel approaches to sustainable architectural design. Green architects, such as Mike Reynolds, use materials such as tires, cans & bottles, rammed earth, and straw bales to build homes. What problems or benefits do you think may arise from Reynold’s approach to domestic architecture? Should ecological concerns be important to homeowners & architects? Why or why not?

Which media that we have learned about is utilized to create this artwork? How does the artist’s use of their selected media emphasize and support their content – the meaning of the work? Does it align with your subjective response? What characteristics of the media aid it in aligning with your subjective response?

Iitian oil painting venus of urbino

Begin by choosing one of the medias from this week’s lecture and/or reading that interests you – one that you’d like to explore further.
Identify an artist that interests you from among the readings we’ve completed, the links provided or an artist that you are already familiar with that interests you.
Find an artwork by that artist which you’d like to reflect on.

NOTE: you cannot write about the same artist or artwork you used for previous Reflective Analyses, you must select a different artist and artwork.

Then, you will provide details based on your research and answer some reflective questions which should include all of the following sections in essay form:

1. Artist (10 points): This portion should be comprised of information about the artist of your choice as well as why you selected them. Begin with: Who is the artist? Why did you choose the artist – what is generally interesting to you about them? Additional suggestions for material: date and place of birth and death, family information, lifetime accomplishments, famous art pieces, effects or impact on society, or historical significance.

* Length: At least 150 words, no more than 250 words.

2. Artwork (15 points): This portion should be your own subjective response to a work of art by the same artist you selected. Why did you choose the artwork – what is generally interesting to you about it? What was your initial, subjective interpretation of the artwork? Did it change as you found out more about the context of the artwork? What emotions, concepts, or ideas did it provoke in you? Do not simply describe the work or state whether or not you ”like” the work; but rather, elaborate with specific details from the work that illustrate your response.

* Include the title of the work (in italics) and a picture of the artwork

* Length: At least 150 words, no more than 250 words.

3. Media (25 points): Which media that we have learned about is utilized to create this artwork? How does the artist’s use of their selected media (material) emphasize and support their content – the meaning of the work? Does it align with your subjective response? What characteristics of the media aid it in aligning with your subjective response? Thinking back to Reflective Analysis 1, are there broader thematic messages conveyed by the artwork based on the specific media utilized? What are they?

* Length: At least 250 words, no more than 350 words.

4. Bibliography (10 points): You must provide a bibliography in one of the formal the correct citation styles that includes at least 3 sources. Online sources are ok, but at least one source must be a book/journal/periodical/ catalog and must be in addition to your textbook, and remember, Wikipedia doesn’t count. You are encouraged to research the artwork at your school’s library by searching through books and articles, written by scholars in the field of art and art history. Check out your campus’s library online and ask a librarian or tutor for help.

Notes:
*You should begin working on your assignment as soon as it is introduced and saving it as a MS Word document on your computer. Prior to and no later than the noted due date and time in the course schedule you will submit your work as instructed. You are strongly encouraged not to wait until the last day / hours / minutes to submit your work to avoid any last-minute technical issues.

*Be sure to use correct spelling and grammar throughout your essay. This will be reviewed, and deductions taken for errors.

*All written assignments must be in your own words, in their entirety and including your research on your selected artist. Plagiarism is a form of academic dishonesty and is strictly prohibited. Note, all assignments are run through a digital plagiarism tool, which generates reports of all portions of the assignment that are not in your own words. These reports will be utilized in determining the accuracy of your assignments.

Are there any key vocabulary words that they use to articulate their art? What kinds of issues or ideas concern them? What kinds of materials or processes do they use? How do they understand the purpose or function of their art?

4 – Write a short conclusion that wraps up your discussion of these artists and their work. Your conclusion should be concise and offer one or two closing reflections to the artists and ideas you explored in your essay.
