Explain how music contributes to the organization and purpose of the film (which also includes editing, cinematography, acting, dialog, etc.).

The Role of Music in Orfeu Negro

The paper on the role of music in Orfeu Negro will actually be due on March 4. Remember that the paper is not a summary of the movie’s plot. You can allude to the plot but not re-narrate it for my benefit. You must address a central and substantive rhetorical point or question, your purpose being to persuade your reader of the validity of your analytical interpretations of the film’s components (especially music, of course). In sum, you need to explain how music contributes to the organization and purpose of the film (which also includes editing, cinematography, acting, dialog, etc.).

Considering the main points raised by various critics in response to the exhibition, what is considered successful and what is considered a failure or a shortcoming of the exhibition? Is there a consensus? Are there differences of opinion?

Assignment #4: Report on an Exhibition / Bibliography

• Select one of the exhibitions from the list provided (see next page)
• Research your exhibition in terms of:
content (which and how many artists, what works are in the show)
stated curatorial goals/argument (what does it try to accomplish?)
how was the show organized (thematic? groupings/sections? chronological?)
reception of the exhibition (what kind of critical response did the exhibition generate?)
venue/s (where is it shown?, does it travel to other venues?, is the reception different from venue to venue?)

• In addition to the catalogue of the exhibition, develop a bibliography on the chosen exhibition with a minimum of 8 entries of substantive writings. (Wikepedia entry does not count, nor does press releases.) You will likely have to review much more than 8 texts to get a full understanding of some of the artists in the show as well as the profile of the curator(s). Your bibliography, however, should be specific to the exhibition.
• Read all items on your bibliography to become familiar with the exhibition and its reception.
• Based on your research write a report (approx. 1200-2000 words) on your research material, which should be organized as follows:

I. Description of the exhibition (include basic facts: when, where, what, who, etc.)

II. Summary of the arguments or goals of the curators

III. Identify three of the strongest and different critical evaluations of the exhibition among your bibliography entries and re-state the author’s views in your words. (You can approach this like an annotated bibliography.)

IV. Considering the main points raised by various critics in response to the exhibition, what is considered successful and what is considered a failure or a shortcoming of the exhibition? Is there a consensus? Are there differences of opinion?

Describe the how Hokusai created a unified composition by organizing repetitions of SHAPES, COLORS. TEXTURES, and PATTERNS, to create visual harmony, even though the scene is chaotic.

“The Great Wave off Shore at Kanagawa”

Using standard English, post 400-500 (minimum) words, make an “argument” (remember, every strong argument has at least two components: a “claim(s)” and “evidence” (or grounds to support the support that claim(s) about how Japanese ukiyo-e artist, Katsushika Hokusai, used the Elements of Art and the Principles of Art (Design) to create his famous woodcut color print, “The Great Wave off Shore at Kanagawa” from his “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji” (1826-1833) series, on page 126.

In your paper, describe the how Hokusai created a unified composition by organizing repetitions of SHAPES, COLORS. TEXTURES, and PATTERNS, to create visual harmony, even though the scene is chaotic. Talk about how a skillful artist can simplify and order a chaotic and threatening scene by organizing visual elements and principles of art into a structure.

Write an expository essay that compares the predictions made in the 2019 report with the 2021 report and persuasively argue to your readers why the overall predictions for the future have changed or have remained the same.

An expository essay

For this paper, you will write an expository essay that compares the predictions made in the 2019 report with the 2021 report and persuasively argue to your readers why the overall predictions for the future have changed or have remained the same. Expository essays are ones where you “investigate an idea, evaluate evidence, expound on the idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea in a clear and concise manner”

Does it draw in your eye? Does it tell a story that keeps you looking? Where is the main focus? Is there any aspect you particularly admire, why? Could an idea be developed further? Is the perspective and proportions accurate? Describe what you see: specific palette, mood, subject, direction, perspective, objectives, use of shading, lighting.

What features would this furnishing have? How might works of design take on this less curative and more care-oriented role?

When designers address illness, they often assume a medical posture

They treat a particular ailment as if works of design were akin to medicine or the work of doctors. We can compare this to a more caring or comforting role. Think about the last time you were sick (eg. a cold or flu); imagine a piece of furniture or a smaller artifact – like a chair, a bed, a pillow, a lamp, or cup– that you might design and that would make that particular experience more comfortable for you. What features would this furnishing have? The larger point of this exercise is that when we’re sick, we often just want to feel comfortable as we get over our maladies. How might works of design take on this less curative and more care-oriented role?

See how much you can see just by careful observation of the piece (remember the “power of patience.) Could you spend 3 hours just looking at this work?

Length: 3 pages, 12 point Times New Roman font, double space with normal (1” margins); do not write more or less than 3 pages. Include a picture of your work on a separate page with identifying information (artist, title, date, medium, size and accession number). This will not count as part of your 3 pages.

Objectives:

Apply the skills and vocabulary of formal analysis to your work.
See how much you can see just by careful observation of the piece (remember the “power of patience.) Could you spend 3 hours just looking at this work?
Doing this will put you in the position of the maker of the piece, considering the decisions that they made and their reasons for doing so.
After your careful looking, you should come up with an interpretation of what the artist was trying to communicate based on your observations. Do not ignore your experience of the piece; but try to analyze your experience in light of the artistic choices made. For example, in writing about the Parthenon metope you might say that the sculptor was using a variety of techniques to convey the energy and the tension of the battle between the Lapiths and the Centaurs. You would then say what those techniques are.
Your interpretation should be stated as a thesis, but remember, your evidence is what you can see in the work. There is a tendency to want to make broad claims about symbolism or philosophy, or political intent, but that would require research, which I’m not asking you to do at this point. This is the step that would help you to formulate questions for further research.

The steps to doing a formal analysis can be found here:
